In a muddy backyard,

freezing cold and dripping wet,

lives poor little Milo,

the long forgotten pet.

Something wondrous happens,

one frosty starlit night,

shooting towards the kennel

is a ball of blinding light…

closer, closer, closer now,

the rumbling increases.

Milo leaps! Just in time!

His kennel’s smashed to pieces!

Although tempted to run away,

his curiosity is greater,

he slowly creeps up to the edge

and peers into the crater…

“Is your name Milo?”

A mole enquires, trembling with fear.

“Something down there’s calling you.

Listen! Can’t you hear?”

It’s not a person Milo finds

but a fallen star, still gleaming.

“I’m here to help you Milo,

I’ve watched you when you’re dreaming…

Never again

need you wish for a friend,

he waits for you

at your journey’s end.

I’ll guide you if we hurry,

to the friend I know you seek.

Off we go, with the utmost haste,

we’ll be there in a week!”

Across the bridge, over town

and down onto the road,

Milo finds a truck pulled up,

its sign says, “Heavy Load.”

“Hey little dog, come with me!

I’m Big the pig! I’m V.I.P!

Let’s ditch this truck, the brakes are shot.

We’ll travel in style, on my yacht!”

With all Big’s talk of “living large”,

his ship is just a leaky barge!

The boat leaves port, the floorboards leak,

the wind begins to moan.

Breaking waves flood the deck,

Milo sees a welcome sight,

but very far away.

Twinkling lights in the dark.

Land! A town! A bay!

Milo swims all night long,

the stormy sea calms down.

Morning comes, he washes up

on the beach of a seaside town.

Big is saved! Here he is,

clutching a palm tree.

No more pigsty for this hog,

“Oh hello there little dog,

is this tasty fish for me?

Come back in the morning,

we’ll fly across the sea.”

“Doesn’t this beat sailing?

Relax, enjoy the ride.

Keep your seatbelt fastened

and your arms and legs inside.”

Soaring, swooping, climbing, gliding.

What a great delight.

“We’re landing soon little dog,

we hope you enjoyed your flight.”

A well-behaved polite young dog

is never long alone,

but after a comfy camel ride,

he sets out on his own.

Milo’s nearly buried alive.

He pushes through the wind and dust,

just trying to survive.

“What’s this dusty, lumpy thing,

lying in my path?

Oh look at the state of you!

You could use a bath.”

“The hardest part awaits you,

it’s time now to be brave.”

So Milo sets off once again

with a hug and a cheery wave.

Clambering up the mountains

and the going is slow.

Milo must be cautious here

of tigers in the snow.

“Keep going.” Says the mountain goat,

“You’ve come too far to stop.

Climb a little faster now,

You’ve reached the home of Ze,

the little boy you’ve travelled

so very far to see…
